CORE also works by researching and conducting educational activities. They also hold special events that raise money for research and provide education to all.
By working with other institutions, CORE can get their message about marine preservation out to the government. They make sure that ocean related policies are being treated in proper manners that protect the oceanic environment while benefiting the US economy and security. They interact with Congress to budget issues that involve scientific research. CORE retains lobbying capabilities to directly advocate approved positions. In addition to all the work they do with the government, seventy-three colleges work with CORE to educate young people about marine life and their environment.
The National Oceanographic Partnership Program (NOPP) started working with CORE in 1997. NOPP has forty-eight research and education programs that help facilitate partnerships among the corporations and the government. They established the program Ocean U.S. That is in charge of observing the ocean while meeting national needs. The Census of Marine Life (CoML) was established in 1999. It is an international organization that focuses on marine life. CoML wishes to fund research and protection among all the world's oceans. They are also in charge of designing databases for marine species, which include information on biological sampling techniques for the marine environment.
CORE in conjunction with the Naval Research Laboratories (NRL), run the Postdoctoral Fellowship Program in Ocean and Atmospheric Science and Technology. NRL provides research in marine meteorology, remote sensing, ocean acoustics, and biological, chemical, physical, and optical oceanography. The National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB) is an educational program that involves 1700 students and teachers that stimulates people's interests in the marine environment. They have a yearly competition that involves ocean science and that requires funding to assist students interested in oceanography. Ocean Science Educators Retreat (OSER) was organized by CORE for program deans to focus teachers on current ocean issues. They discuss the issues on a biyearly basis and get support form NOPP, NORLC and the OCEAN Research Advisory Panel. OSER also includes an alumni survey and intern program for college graduates in the field of marine science.
Every summer CORE holds the Ocean Race Chesapeake Program. The race itself is called the Volvo Ocean Race and its purpose is to provide fun and education about oceanography to those participating in the race. It provides students and teachers with a historical background and information on science.
CORE has research institutes all over the world. The information collected by people who work at CORE is imperative because it will lead the nation into the 21st century. Through ocean research we can manage the living and non-living marine resources in a better way that ensure our national security without damaging the planet. This research will also provide in protecting us form natural disasters due to global climate change. Unfortunately, researchers need to do more than observe the environment. They are desperately trying to find ways to communicate their data to the public so that the public can assist their ideas to help the oceanic environment.
The goal of CORE is to work with government and scientists to provide funds for research. CORE plays an active role in strengthening the management of oceanographic research programs. On a yearly basis, they will hold the committee on the Dynamics of Earth and Ocean Systems. Its efforts plan basic observatory research of the ocean. CORE and NOPP also have a joint partnership where they manage 14 federal agencies that conduct research on marine life.
CORE wishes to advance people's knowledge by educating the leaders of tomorrow. They have many national programs that cater to educating children from kindergarten to twelfth grade. The backbone of their educational programs is the previously mentioned National Ocean Bowl of Sciences (NOSB). Students excel in math and science and get the opportunity to work with experts. It also inspires teamwork, competition, and creativity in students. It also provides teachers with new and innovative ideas on how to teach children about marine science.
CORE's legislative policy states that science and technology is the key to economic growth. The government and CORE rely on each other for the safety and security of the United States. CORE needs constant funding so that it may conduct research to help out the environment and the country. It also is a positive force in the educational system. State governments and universities themselves also provide CORE and its corresponding agencies with funding so that it may better the future of the environment. It is a beneficial agency that provides a service that will assist our nation and planet into the future.
